Well, it was the last thing they had to base it off of. FFX was the last thing that SS made by themself. SE had a hand in FFXI, and SS was likely doing it because they were running out of ideas, since most MMORPG are heavily dependant on the players more than the actual game itself.
And from what we've seen, SE has YET to come up with something original in the games other than to make everything shiny, so it's more than likely they based it off of Iron Giant, among other monsters in FFXI.

Now, now we might have to discuss this statement. FFXI has 4 expansions each full of storyline and missions adding up to hours and hours of game play like all the rest of the franchise. Just the TaU expansion has 30+ missions alone. Could not say how many various sub quest there are but I know just counting my screen there is more than 100 in each of the three regions. So saying that FFXI is only a place where the players do Role Playing to make it happen would be total inaccurate, but then maybe I read your post wrong....

Now as to this SE has not made anything original. FFXII might have been copied somewhat from how FFXI works but it was pretty darn original. So much so that FF fans for the most part hated it. It was not based the on world we knew but on newer type game which rocked our happy turn based land. Their "original stuff " I do not like but SE has done more "new" changes to the franchise since they took over, even in its remakes with tweaking of the game play on the old series, then SS did in 20 years. I for one vote that the stick to the SS methods, but they have come up with new things and I fear what we will end up with FFXIII.

No no. I'm not saying that the gameplay isn't important, since it very much is. What I'm saying is that the majority of player's experiences are extremely heavily dependant on the other players that play, more than the actual gameplay itself.
I mean, I hate the FFXI/FFXII battle system (not with a passion, but I just don't particularly like it), and that's a huge part of the game for me. However, I did enjoy the game itself because there were nice players that were helpful and kind. The sidequests were fun (except the one I got lost and ran into a level 50+ area), but they weren't nearly as fun as when I was sitting in guild chat talking about getting ambushed by a wraith while I was doing them.

I'll break briefly from FFXI and talk about other MMO. For example, Ragnarok Online. I've gone to serveral private servers of this game, and my experience has varied greatly for each one. One was full of drama (not too enjoyable), one was a very laidback one where most people just stayed in town and talked (I was always there), one was full of experienced players who were nice and PLed me to max level a few times, and one was full of experienced players that liked to brag and PK a lot.
Exact same game, exact same monster, exact same items, different players.

The same can be applied for FFXI, since it's an MMO, whereas it's very dependant on players. If you're just soloing the game in the middle of a desert (done it), it gets boring VERY fast.

Well, the gameplay (which again, is a huge part of the game for me) was almost a complete rip-off from FFXI. The only real difference is that they added timebars (which, I had thoroughly enjoyed not having a time bar in FFXI) and gambits to control NPC party members that, in FFXI, would have been real players with a lot of experience to offer to the team.
I'll give that, yes, the storyline and characters were original, but from what I've seen of the two games, it was more of an offline version of FFXI for those that didn't want to pay for it (with evidence of viera being a replacement for mithra, and there being other such instances for galka and the other races, as pointed out by Gondor when we were comparing the games last summer) with another storyline and non-customizable characters.

And yeah, too much before dawn.

But yes, I do disagree with what they're doing. The semi-realtime wasn't a bad idea, they just didn't have the, lets be frank, talent to pull it off. My only hope for FFXIII is that it's fully realtime, but knowing Se, tehy're going to make it all flash and no substance like they did with KHII.
