Death Note (possible spoilers)

I'm sure some of you have heard of it by now, if you haven't already read it yourself. So far it's been explicitly banned in Japanese schools and is being reviewed to be banned in Germany and other eastern countries.

The manga itself is controversal, if not a little crazy, as well as very intelligent. I swear my IQ has gone up 50 points just from reading it.
It's about a boy named Light Yagami (Japanese name being Yagami Raito) whom finds this notebook called the Death Note (go figure). According to legend, a Death Note is owned only by Gods of Death (Japanese word is Shinigami, literally meaning Death God and is similar to the American grim reaper).
Supposedly anyone who's name is written in the Death Note, will die within 40 seconds of it being written if the writer has thier face in mind, unless details are added in which it will take a few minutes more. He plans to use this power to rid the world of all people who have done horrible things. By him doing these things, he earned the nickname of Kira (litterally meaning: Killer) from his followers.

His only problem is a detective that goes by the alias of L (above in chibi form). He is the world's greatest detective and has never lost a case.
So, it ensues as a battle of wits between Light and L. Light is trying to get rid of L and L is trying to find Kira, and believes Light Yagami is Kira himself.

I'm personally on chapter 91 in the manga.
So far as I've seen on the anime, it's got the gist of the manga, but doesn't really bring out all the subtle details of it.

Anyone else read the manga or seen the shows?

I love this anime, and I do believe it can increase your IQ.I felt it has to me. Anyway I highly recommand this espicially if you like bleach.

Agreed. The manga is absolutely better than the anime.
Except the second half. N and M are horrible no matter how you look at them.

I realized something while I was thinking of some Kira-catching-tactics in sewing class sinec I had nothing better to do sicne we had a sub, and figured something out.

**Spoilers**
At the end, Near says something like, "We're going to take you to jail since you're a mass murderer" despite that even if the public found out who Kira was, they would only support him and pwn off N and the others.
Had Ryuk stopped and realized "hey, they can't arrest him. The best they can do is kill him, so I don't have to wait for him to die in jail, which they probably won't do anyways."

Which leads me to wonder why it ended the way it did with these things. Was it because Ryuk was an idiot? Or because N was such an idiot that he thought he could actually win?

I now this is kinda old... But I just finished watching the whole thing on anime-ss.com and I felt so unfulfilled. Since Sythe left that link in the sticky i'm going to read the manga from the beginning.

Good plan. Though, before you start, forget EVERYTHING you saw in the anime.
It's nothing near as good as the manga, and it'll just get you confused and make you skip over important details, kinda like they do ALL over the anime.
