Which are best? Movies based on videogames, or games based on movies?

I got this from gamefaqs poll of the day, but thought it was quite an interesting subject.
I recently made a topic for the SH movie in the SH forum, and, as expected, RE movies popped up as well, and the general opinion is "they suck" (referred to movies based on videogames).
However, I came to think, that I'd rather die, or even worse, I'd rather see one of those awful RE movies, before playing a game based on a movie. I remember playing The Mummy in my old PS1, and OMG, it sucked! Worst game I played in my life undoubtely.

So, it seems there's not a good relation between games and movies, both of them based on the other, are not fulfilling the public's expectations. Although I personally think that movies based on games had better results so far.

So, what do you think on this subject?
Should companies give up on attemps to mix videogames with movies, or should they continue until they get really good at it (if that's possible)?

By the way, I always wanted some FF movie

, but not a sequel like Advent Children

, an entire FF made into a movie

, but I guess that was too much to ask

On the other hand, if they did that, they would have probably ruined some good FFs

P.S.someone needs to do some work on those images you used as emotes, very crudely cropped...

Eh. Well, it's hard to crop them with hoods (or even without) and still make it look good.
Besides, it's not like we had it professionally done. One of our members that's good with photoshop did it for us.

I didn't even see that movie about Charlie

But now Harry Potter movies came to my mind. The harry potter games were horrendous =S

I saw the original movie. It was pretty good.

And yeah. I even remember having one of the Harry Potter games on my GBC.....and it sucked horribly.
Especially after my nephew overwrote my file.

I have never played a movie-based game since...Predator 2 for the Sega Genisis. That game was pretty bad, let me tell you.

Now I might be showing my age but the real stinker and when they should have stopped making games from movies was ET. The ET game single handed destroyed the video game market for years ...
