Maybe. Though, it's more likely that it was somethign that scaped from the Mexican style of celebration. It could have been that they had offered sugarcane, or some other kind of particular food, to the spirits so that they would not be angry or would not force bad luck upon them.

The ceremony was to scare away the evil spirits, and we dress up in "scary" costumes to do the same. It just became less.....formal?
