If you're new to the system, it's not dumb at all.
To get gil, you can post in the forums or kill monsters in RPG. All of which can be spent on weapons and/or armor for your RPG charcter, gifts to send to others, and even used as a payment for favors that others do for you on here (i.e. to pay someone making a sig and avatar graphics set for you).
The arcade I don't really touch on too often, but Pacman might be able to help. I think the farthest we've gotten with it yet is simple challanges.
