Default Levelling Up Low Level Characters

Draft copy -

Star Ocean 3 - Tutorial - Levelling up Low level Characters

Roger - (Starting Level - L6)

Roger’s starting skills -

Fiery Axe - Ok first off Fiery Axe is SLO-OW. Roger gains much better skills than this soon but still it’s not completely useless despite it’s speed (lack thereof) - it's fire elemental so it's worth using to exploit that elemental weakness sometimes.

Short O - Yes he has other physicals but for the most part this is the main one of note. This attack has high damage modifiers and is one of the strongest physical attacks in the game along with Sophia and Peppita’s Short Os. Not only that but the attack can hit a number of times with so the damage modifiers can really add up. Even a L6 Roger with no weapon can do some nice damage with this - well for a L6 character anyway ;p

Roger’s starting equipment -

NO WEAPON!

That’s right Roger comes with absolutely nothing equipped in his weapon slot so if this bothers you I recommend buying a weapon for him before you go into the forest to get him. Then you will have a weapon to give to him once you have him.

Recommend equipment for Roger -

Weapon -

Battle Axe (from shop in Aquios)

Shark Helm (from Item Creation)

Broad Axe (from shop in Airyglyph)

The Airyglyph weapon is the most expensive but it’s worth it.

Armour - Heavy Armour/Masterworkplate

Accessories - Warrior's Bracelet + Regeneration Symbol

Suggested levelling up area - A good way to level Roger up is against the Grape binds (trees) in Duggus Forest.

*Thanks to my friend legend for reminding me of the Grape binds.

Enemy weaknesses -

*Weak to Fire
*Low MP

Good attacks to use against them -

Hammer of Might (Cliff)
Blazing Sword (Fayt)
Short O/Fiery Axe - Roger
Whirling Heat (Roger)
Shadow Wave (Nel)
Charge (Roger)

Level (s) to aim for -

* L10 - Roger learns Whirling Heat (classed as an offensive support skill) - This skill can snag the enemy and spin it around in circles dealing damage yet keeping the enemy from attacking. It doesn’t always work but when it does it’s very useful and that tends to be the case on most generic/random enemies and early game bosses. Worth using on the Grapebinds when you learn it.

* L12 - Roger learns Charge (classed as a damage skill) at L12 - This is one of the most powerful skills on disc one for Roger - his Charge is not only super fast but it can deal tons of damage too. I recommend learning this skill as soon as possible. Even a non Berserk Roger can pack quite the punching power with Charge and a good weapon equipped.

* L15 - Roger learns Land Mines (offensive support skill with great damage) at this level. This skill is *important* because it is one of the few abilities that Roger has capable of hitting airborne enemies. Since there are a few flying enemies as bosses shortly after getting Roger and completing Duggus Forest it’s a good idea to learn it if you plan to use Roger for those fights.

With Land Mines Roger runs around laying mines on the ground. After a set amount of time or if he uses another battle skill the mines go off emitting an explosion upwards. The range is good enough to hit fliers.

As the skill level of Land Mines increases so does the amount of mines that Roger can lay. Eventually this skill can be considered as one of the more powerful in the game as it eventually has around the same damage potential as Peppita’s Faerie Friend. It can also keep an enemy bounced around and has a chance of inflicting the Chaos (confusion) status effect on enemies.

* L16 - Roger learns No Guard. This skill has the chance of preventing a character from flinching when attacked by an enemy. This can prevent the enemy from being knocked out of their cancel combo chains. Normally I don’t use No Guard but for an HP/DEF tank like Roger it can be good for him and he is one of the few characters I usually use it on for a while.

* L18 - Berserk + Critical Hit HP - You really don’t need to level Roger all the way up to L18 as he can be a good party member before that but if you like power levelling/building up your characters and/or your other characters are already high levelled and you want to bring Roger up to their stage then feel free to level Roger up until he obtains Berserk.

Berserk is a tactical support skill that raises a character’s HP damage output and reduces the amount of fury that their moves cost which enables them to do longer cancel combo skill chains. On the negative side it also lowers character DEF but for the most part the skill’s benefits far out do this side effect.

Critical Hit HP is a support skill that has the chance of activating to boost a character’s damage. Good for when you want to boost Roger’s damage even further.

Recommended sets ups for disc one Roger -

Short X - Whirling Heat
Short O - Charge
Support - No Guard + Critical Hit HP

Coming up Next - Peppita Power

I'm posting this here because just now because I won't have access to my home PC during the week just the library one and at least I'll be able to edit my post from there.
