It's not dust because when my PS2 started acting weird, I always clean it and check to make sure that the optic is working and all that. It MIGHT be that it overheats since I do have it on for months on end, but even then it didn't break until the PS3 came out. Didn't even show a problem with it until the PS3 came out.....
